Welcome back! In this segment, we will continue our journey into the origin of sports. In our first segment, we learned about Agon games: the war-like sports which encompass the essence of competition. They helped us to understand that organized competitions may have originally stemmed from forms of military training. In our last segment, we then journeyed through the world of Alea games: which utilize elements of suspense and chance to create exciting exhibits. Now, I would like to discuss a new feature that many sports incorporate: Ilinx, which will allow us to understand the history of sports and competition and their role within society.
Ilinx games embody the feelings of vertigo, excitement, and dizziness that many games create within their participants. This principle is present in many fast-paced and action-packed sports. Roger Caillois, a French sociologist, created the term to describe play that uses unusual and disorienting movement to create feelings of disorientation and excitement. These feelings are evident in many amusement park rides, like rollercoasters, free-fall rides, and tea-cup-style rides. Part of the thrill of these rides is the disorientation that the body goes through. Think of how scary yet exciting going down a steep hill on a rollercoaster is. The moments on these rides seem to freeze and fly by at the same time. Many people notice these feelings through goosebumps, tingles throughout the body, or sensations of euphoria. Many extreme sports and competitions like rock climbing, racing, and cliff diving, incorporate illinx.
Many less extreme sports and competitions also include elements of ilinx. For example, Gymnastics, dancing, and surfing recreate the sensations of vertigo and euphoria in a safe and controlled environment, allowing more people to experience these feelings.
So what attracts people to these recreations, which can be risky and even dangerous at times? Ilinx games help to release adrenaline within the body, which creates thrilling feelings of amusement and enjoyment. However, not all people experience the same feelings while partaking in illinx sports, which often leads to polarizing results in people who partake in the events. For example, While many enjoy the feelings of dizziness and disorientation while riding roller coasters, many others dread these feelings. Ilinx games appeal greatly to some, but to others, they do not. it is hard to recreate these thrilling feelings outside of ilinx games which may help to explain why many who try them, continue to participate in them.
Illinx games have persisted throughout history because they help to bring change and freshness to everyday life. Illinx games help to create feelings that stimulate our primal nature to survive, allowing us to feel satisfied and excited, having completed the activity. While the activity might not have put us in any real danger, it still helps to keep the body alert and attentive ready for what's next. The state of awareness that these recreations create is hard to recreate in real life, helping to explain why illinx games have persisted throughout history.
Illinx games are no doubt exciting to watch and participate in, as they create sensations of thrill and excitement. The unmatched nature of these sports draws people in, as they can't wait to enjoy the vertigo-inducing nature of these sports.
